The Deer Mountain Hay Blossom

Deer Mountain Hay (Hypericum montanum) is a perennial plant belonging to the family John's wort (Hypericaceae). It is a plant of rather dry, lime-rich soil in deciduous forests and scrub. The species is native to Europe and the Caucasus. In the Netherlands, the plant in South Limburg and Gelderland. The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and very much reduced.


The plant is 30-80 cm high. The oval to lanceolate leaves are hairy on the underside with very short or adjacent protruding hairs. Along the edges are black gland dots and only the top leaves are filled with essential oils translucent dots.


Deer Mountain Hay blooms from June to September with pale yellow, 1-1.5 cm wide, not beklierde flowers. The pointed sepals are lanceolate. The flower stem is cylindrical and usually not branched.


The fruit is a capsule driehokkige.
