Angophora

Angophora is a genus of 10 species of trees or large shrubs of the family (Myrtaceae), native to eastern Australia. It is closely related to Corymbia and Eucalyptus, and all of them are usually called " eucalyptus. "

Description

One of its distinguishing features is that the Angophora also have opposite leaves alternate, and the fruits are missing an end cap called Operculum. Angophora also has a fruit with pronounced ribs, while the fruit of Eucalyptus is usually smoother appearance.

The species of this genus vary in appearance from a bushy form, such as the Dwarf Apple (Angophora hispida) to large trees reaching heights of 30 m. The bark is rough and scaly. The leaves are lanceolate, dark green. The flowers are creamy white and grow in large inflorescences.

Etymology

Angophora The word comes from the Greek word Angos, or "carrier" and phor, meaning "cup" or "vase" with this refers to the cup-shaped fruit borne by the members of this genus.
