Pritchardia

The genus Pritchardia belongs to the family Arecaceae. It includes some thirty species palmate leaves. It occurs in tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean, as Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Tuamotu and Hawaii.

Description

They are solitary palm whose trunk can reach 40 meters in height. The leaves are costopalmées and fan. The petioles are unarmed. The stipe is longitudinal, bare and smooth and coated fibers, and surrounded ringed scars.

The flowers are hermaphrodite and the fruits are formed at the tip of an inflorescence often arched, with branches simple or compound, or longer depending on the species, but in any case exceed the length of the leaves.

Habitat

Nineteen species of the genus Pritchardia are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands archipelago. There are also species on other islands in the Pacific. The species grow in rainy areas, and are fond of volcanic soils.

According to data from the IUCN Red List, many species of the genus are extremely endangered.

Culture and use

The palm tree is often grown for its ornamental value.
