Rafinesquia neomexicana

Rafinesquia neomexicana is a plant of the Asteraceae family, native to North America.

Morphological description

Vegetative

This herbaceous plant 15-50 cm tall, with smooth stems and leaves little fitted, has a general color drawing on the often gray and produces a milky latex color. The leaves near the base measure between 5 and 20 cm long and are divided into narrow lobes, and those farther up the stem are much smaller.


Reproductive

Flowering occurs between March and May Bracts are short and have a fine tip, the most external curl outwards. The inflorescences are white flower heads, often streaked with purple-pink on the outside, and located at the tip of the few branches of the flower stem.

Each flower head has a diameter ranging from 2.5 to 4 cm. The florets are ligulate and more external, longer, up to 1.5 cm in length . each ligule is indented and forms at its 5 tabs. The fruits are achenes extended by a thin stalk topped with stiff bristles plumose at the tip.

Distribution and habitat

This plant grows in rocky or sandy desert areas, often building on a bush or boulder. Its range extends north from southern California and Utah to western Texas (United States) and south to Mexico.
