Description
Moraea species grow as a perennial, herbaceous plants. These tubers are geophytes (sometimes called botanically incorrect onions) with fibrous casings ("Tunic") as Überdauerungsorgane. The entire plant is hairless.
In the lower part of the simple or branched stem some leaves are produced, arranged and alternate zweilig. The sessile, simple leaves are usually parallelnervigen bifacial, flat to two flat. The leaf margin is smooth.
The total branched inflorescences are composed of "Rhipidien" who are either terminally singly or in groups together on a branch. A pair of opposite, laubblattähnlicher bracts are among the "Rhipidien. Usually a peduncle is present. The hermaphroditic, but somewhat flowers are triadic and are similar to those of Iris. Are two circles with three free bracts usually present.
The three outer bracts are usually larger than the inner. The three outer bracts are nailed and their ends are bent back to spread, often with darker nectar lines. The three inner bracts are erect or spreading. The colors range from white to the bracts yellow and blue.
It's just a circle with three fertile stamens available. In many species the stamens are partially to completely fused into a tube surrounding the style. The anthers are close to the style branches. Three carpels are fused to an inferior ovary, each with 20-50 ovules ovary chamber.
The style is filiform below and then usually divided into three flat, blumenblattartige Griffeläste. In some species, each of the three Griffeläste divided into two lobes.
The fruits are spherical to cylindrical capsule lokulizid and contain many (20-100) seeds. The seeds are oily.
