Nettle and nettle - mimicry
Archangel's name comes from the old meaning deaf = not working. The leaves and stems resemble those of nettles, but have no nettles with formic acid. Lamium grow in the same nitrogen-rich, not too dry habitat as nettles, for example, along roadsides and forest edges.
The similarity between the two is therefore a case of mimicry Bates. Most animals acquainted with the nettle, the nettle alone.
Yet the archangel relatively easy to distinguish from the nettle:
* The leaves of the nettle cartels are clearly "sloppy".
* The veins of the archangel are more pronounced, also seen from the top.
* The nettle leaves or stems are always some russet elements: for example, spots or veins. When nettles, this never occurs.
* The main stems of nettle are square, with clear edges, while nettle stalks only slightly ribbed, almost round.
* Lamium have distinctive, colorful labiate. Since no labiates nettles, have a totally different Inflorescence inconspicuous, yellowish green to brown.
